Orwell Dethroned: Update to the Top 100 Novels List

After sitting atop the best 100 novels list since the beginning of the project in 2007, George Orwell’s 1984 has finally lost the top spot.  Harper Lee’s classic, To Kill A Mockingbird, has taken over by just a few votes.   To check out the rest of the changes that took place in this update visit the Best 100 Novels main page at http://www.thebest100lists.com/best100novels/.

Next week check back for an update to the Top 100 Songs list.  This update is scheduled for Monday the 14th of February.  Valentines day for those of you who are not paying attention.

Still to come, in the coming weeks, is the publishing of several new lists that have been accepting votes for a few months now.  Once those lists are published, there are already plans to add an additional 5 lists to the site based on email that came in on the old list suggestion form.  To suggest new lists you can now go to the forum and post in the New List Ideas Forum.

Hope to see you there!

Varying Book Reviews

Its funny how people receive different books and how they review them.  Here are a few excerpts from some recent book reviews from The Best 100 Novels List.

  • “I hate this book. My love for reading was KILLED after finishing”
  • “LIterally just finished reading this book an hour ago and I thought it was amazing”
  • “At first this book was very confusing”
  • “This book is the best book that I have ever read (and I have read all ten of the current top ten in this list!)”
  • “do not this book I like”
  • “It’s so boring and samey that it’s like Chinese water torture. Awful.”
  • “It is amongst the best 10 twentieth century novels I have read”
  • “this book is brilliant. an absolute master piece”

While there are vastly differing opinions on that list, they are all taken from reviews of Catch 22 by Joseph Heller.  Nearly all of the books on the list have reviews with this type of variance and I just found it entertaining to look at the way someone can call a book the best book ever written while someone else says that the exact same book killed their love for reading.

Anyone else find any entertaining reviews on any of the lists that are worth mentioning?
